What is BMI?

You might have heard of BMI being used in relation to health or weight, and if you’re wondering ‘what is BMI?’, you’ve come to the right place!

What does BMI stand for?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index – so you can see why it’s shortened to three easy letters! It’s an easy way for us – or our doctor – to see whether our weight puts us at any health risk.

Is BMI a suitable guide for everyone?

Not everyone. It’s not suitable for people with an extremely high muscle mass, mums-to-be or under 16s. However it’s a useful tool for the rest of us.

How do I discover what my BMI is?

You can work out your BMI without a BMI calculator, by dividing your weight (kg) by your height (m) squared! Or you can forget the math, and use our BMI calculator which also works in inches and pounds!

What’s a healthy BMI?

In the US, a healthy BMI is considered to be between 18.5 and 25. Within this range you’re at the least risk of developing weight-related medical problems. If you’re outside this BMI range right now, it can help you decide on a weight change target.

What do I do if my BMI’s outside that range?

That all depends on what your BMI is. Take a look at our quick guide below, along with some helpful advice to help you decide on a plan of action:

My BMI’s below 18.5

In this range you’re underweight. Trying to stay within this range can be unhealthy, potentially leading to problems such as osteoporosis and anemia.

My BMI’s between 25-30

In this range you may be at greater risk of developing weight-related health problems. Losing weight will reduce this risk and could also improve existing health conditions. If you’d like some motivation to lose weight, along with recipe ideas, support and inspiration, we’d be delighted to help.

My BMI’s above 30

In this range your health is at greater risk. Losing weight and maintaining that loss will improve your health and fitness – in fact losing as little as just 10% of your body weight could bring enormous health benefits. We’re here to help you reach the BMI you’d love to be.

If you do need our help and support to lose 10lbs or more, we’ll be with you every step of the way. Discover more about how our members discover the motivation to lose weight or decide which of our supportive programs will be best for you right here…
