Shaun's in shape for a healthier future

After his health and family life were affected by his weight, Shaun Wheatley joined Slimming World. An astounding 95lbs lighter, Shaun’s more active than ever and making the most of every moment with his wife and children. Shaun shares his incredible story with us.

“I met my (now wife) Bridget as a slim, fit 16-year-old and we got married five years later. I had a huge appetite and loved my big breakfasts, burger and fries and beer. But my physically demanding job working on building sites, weight training in the gym, sailing and soccer, meant I was able to keep my weight stable.

“You don’t often hear men complaining that childbirth ruined their figures, but in my case, it’s true! The arrival of Ebony and Brook in 1992 and 1993 brought a far more sedentary lifestyle. I preferred to stay at home with Bridget and the babies, drinking wine and eating junk-food, not to mention indulging in takeouts.

“I didn’t notice how big I’d got until I looked at vacation photos… and when my clothes size increased. The final straw came when I was out clothes shopping with Bridget. Pain was gripping my chest, arms and legs as I lumbered around the shop. Bridget took one look at me and thought I was having a heart attack. I wasn’t, but I realized I needed to do something about my health.

Luckily, Bridget knew someone who had lost weight with Slimming World's healthy eating plan - Food Optimising. After my first weigh-in, and an 8lbs loss, I soon realized I was in the right place.

“I felt so much of my energy returning almost immediately, as I ate more healthily and enjoyed all the fresh fruit and vegetable I was eating. The plan was easy and even on vacation I managed to lose 9lbs.

“Getting slim has enabled me to become the ‘action dad’ I always wanted to be. Even tying my own shoelaces was an impossible task before but now I can join in with the children – wakeboarding, sailing, cycling, golf, snowboarding, you name it!  

“Sometimes I look back at the fateful shopping trip that triggered my lifestyle change and feel almost grateful. I’ve turned from heart-attack-waiting-to-happen to slim, active 40-something. If I’d carried on with my old lifestyle I’m sure I would have struggled to reach 50.

“Now I’ll be making the most of life for many, many years to come – with my gorgeous, slim wife and healthy kids by my side.”
